First-Generation College Celebration Week

Why Nov. 8th?

In 2021, Mizzou celebrated its inaugural First Gen Day, Nov. 8th, a national celebration honoring the signing of the Higher Education Act (HEA) of 1965 by President Lyndon B. Johnson. In addition to creating federal grants and loan programs to help students finance their education, the legislation made key investments in institutions of higher education. Much like other notable legislation, HEA was intended to help level the playing field for marginalized and low-income Americans across the country attend college. First-Generation College Celebration Week created by the Center for First-Generation Student Success is a nationwide celebration throughout the month of November. Mizzou doesn’t just celebrate First-Gen students on ONE day, we celebrate the entire year!
